Position Summary
The Behavioral Health Intake Admissions Nurse is a licensed position providing Nursing interventions, assessments, Intake/Crisis Evaluations, diagnosis, prognosis, counseling, and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Qualifications
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education: N/A
Minimum Experience/Skills: One (1) year experience or more experience of behavioral crisis assessment/management. Ability to deal with people who may be combative. Knowledge of psychodynamic principles and fundamentals of psychotherapy. One (1) year or more experience in application and formulation of diagnostic categories of mental illness (i.e. DSM-IV or DSM-V). Knowledge of psychopharmacology and disease entities and interventions, nursing skills and procedures, principles, techniques and trends in counseling, psychotherapy, crisis management, clinical case management, and various treatment modalities, biological, behavioral and environmental aspects of emotional disturbances, mental disability, retardation and substance abuse, culturally proficient practices with diverse caseload, scope and activities of the public and private health and welfare agencies and other available resources, principles and techniques of mental health education, prevention, and crisis intervention within the community.
License/Certificates/Credentials: Current CA Registered Nurse License, BLS for Healthcare Providers, Behavioral Management Training as mandated by hospital.
Physical Demands: Frequent considerable standing/walking. Lift/position up to 25 lbs. Push/pull up to 25 lbs of force. Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity and mobility
Touch, auditory and visual perception and acuity, adequate vocal pitch and volume, ability to move quickly.
Vision Requirements: Sufficient perceptive acuity (vision and hearing) to perform all the related duties of the position
Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, trauma, illness and death), emergency and crisis situations, subject to irregular hours, occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, occasional exposure to radiation hazards, radioactive substances and biohazard material.

Position Accountabilities
- Ensures all patients are registered through admitting.
- Performs on-site and off-site Intake/Crisis Assessments.
- Ensures patient and staff safety at all times by attending and maintaining training up-to-date, use of safety procedures, collaboration with Security, Law Enforcement, Interpreter resources as indicated.
- Perform timely Emergency Medical Screening and suicide assessment on all patients.
- Collaborates with Nursing staff, on-Call Psychiatrist, and other Allied Medical Staff as appropriate to ensure patient safety and expedited treatment.
- Collaborates with Facility Medical Physicians and routes patients to Emergency Department to ensure patients’ Acute Medical needs are attended to.
- Attends patient’s emergency, obtains and communicates necessary information to the Admitting staff.
- Ensures Intake/Crisis assessment form is completed on every patient prior to admission.
- Performs Admission InterQual reviews and documents medical necessity as per Tenet’s Policy and Procedures.
- Completes and serves the patient with necessary Advisement forms as indicated.
- Ensures appropriate payer authorizations and if applicable (non-contracted payer) a signed “Letter of Agreement” is in place and communicated to the Admission Department prior to facilitating an inpatient admission.
- Contacts Nursing Manager and Psychiatrist, provides report on patient’s clinical status, to facilitate admission process.
- Provides appropriate nursing interventions. Competent in all routine nursing skills, including: (1) medication administration and (2) safe use of any medical equipment, such as glucose meters
- Adheres to DMC practices for pain management with specific consideration given to the patient’s age and functional level.
- Works with Shift Managers/Charge Nurses to identify patient bed assignment that best meets the patient’s treatment needs.
- Ensures that the operations and patient care follow DMC and department policies and standards.
- Contacts the psychiatrist for a decision on all patient dispositions, decision to admit or release.
- Provides ongoing nursing assessment for secluded or restrained patients.
- Demonstrates the ability to provide care emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures.
- Provides documented, ongoing assessments of patients awaiting placement in the intake area.
- Works collaboratively with a wide range of disciplines.
- Prepares and presents cases for review by other staff.
- Prepares and maintains all assigned logs, data and reports.
- Act as a resource and maintains information regarding available Community and outpatient services.
- Prepares clear concise records and makes recommendations on the basis of such information.
- Retains personal objectivity while dealing with the problems of others.
- Performs role in a manner consistent with professional standards and ethics.
- Prioritizes the problems of mentally disordered persons and determine their needs.
- Decides appropriate treatment focus and methods without clinical supervision.
- Collaborates with others as needed to integrate various clinical approaches into interventions.
- Recognizes a potential crisis, handle stress and bizarre behavior and deliver crisis intervention services.
- Participates in team intervention and Crisis management.
- Secures the cooperation of relatives in intervention.
- Advises clients on available community resources.
- Provides transportation information and resources as needed to ensure patient safely transported to destination.
- Acts in a liaison and advocate capacity between the client, persons or agencies involved.
- Makes referrals and other arrangements as assigned.
- Participates in training programs conducted for the benefit of the community.
- Acts as a consultant for other community agencies.
- Communicates and follows the organization’s chain of command for notification of patient care and/or service issues.
- Demonstrates the ability to organize workload, set priorities, and use time efficiently to complete work on time and in an organized manner. Maintains neat and uncluttered work environment.
- Completes incident reports and ensures the physician and management are fully aware of any incidents occurring during their shift.
- All other duties as assigned.
